OEE and Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma is hybrid of several systems that have emerged in manufacturing over the last decade. Lean manufacturing systems were implemented to refine manufacturing processes to their most simple form an example of a lean manufacturing system would be a Kanban system. Kanban generally refers to a card based perpetual inventory system. Production orders are created when the level of cards reaches a given level. Electronic versions of Kanban systems exist as well.

On the quality side of Lean Six Sigma systems are the quality systems. Generally these systems employ methods of identifying the best ways to manufacture a quality product and then perpetuating it. In addition a good quality system will include a corrective actions system that helps the manufacturing identify problems that relate to a given product and process combination and then track the effectiveness of the implemented correction trials.

There are a lot of systems on the market that cater to lean concepts. I tend to value systems with a very high degree of configurability. These systems are generally put together by smaller IT companies like Plexus, or Tuppas Software. Small It companies are generally more likey to be able to adapt their systems affordably to the needs of midsize manufacturing companies. The Tuppas system as an example contains OEE operational equipment effectiveness modules that can be easily altered based on the specific needs of the installation. Tuppas created OEE applications for the Honda supply chain and the company has an impressive track record.
